Dielectric Armored Fiber or Aluminum Armored Fiber

There’s a dielectric armored fiber cable that’s been on the market for a couple of years now and it has not taken off as well as I expected. Let’s take a look at this cable from our YouTube channel.

I think maybe one of the issues is when a customer wants an armored cable, they want the most protection they can get. As mentioned in the video it has 4 times the protection compared to the aluminum armor that has 7 times the protection according to the manufacture. My personal belief, I think the aluminum has more than 7 times. The aluminum is so strong and durable and another issue that comes up is the end user is worried about the cable being cut by accident and the aluminum armored is no easy task. There’s even a tool to help you cut it open.

The other issue is grounding, sure the aluminum armor needs to be grounded but it’s fairly simple and it’s also talked about in one of our previous post.

On the other hand I can see this being a great choice for a location where you want a little more protection than your standard indoor cable and maybe there’s no convenient way to ground the fiber cable. The ball is in your court.

Do I need to run a Cat5e Plenum Patch Cord?

Let’s talk about the plenum-rating for just a second, plenum-rated cable gets it’s name from the HVAC term plenum spaces. The plenum spaces are those that lie between a drop and standard ceiling and it is this section where the air in a building circulates, thus aiding in heating and cooling functions. When there is no conduit used, plenum cable is often required since the cable is considered to be freely installed.

The plenum space allows fire and smoke to travel quickly. By using plenum rated cable, the levels of toxicity in the smoke would be lower since plenum cable is coated with a jacket that is typically made of flame-resistant material such as Teflon. This special jacketing makes the cable smoke less than regular PVC cable and the smoke that is emitted is less toxic. Keep in mind that smoke inhalation is the number one cause of death in fires.

A Category 6 “Half U” 24 port patch panel?!

Yeah, you read right. A half rack space patch panel. It’s a new product and so far it’s received a mixed reception but I think this panel has it’s place in, of course high density applications. As you know, some data centers are really pack and space is a high premium so I could see how installing a few of these in a cabinet can go a long way, especially when things get crowded.

More than just a wiremapper?
